You want to make a pamphlet using photo's that you've taken for a company?

And you want to know which is better for this process, Illustrator, or PS.

    I recommend Photoshop.

I recommend Photoshop for croping or color correction and Indesign for Layout.

    Specs:
Al iMac 20" 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Photos in Photoshop.

    Vector images in Illustrator.

Then bring everything together in InDesign or QuarkXPress.

If you don't have the latter, construct everything in Illustrator. Place in images you've saved in PS.

    well got the job,
And today I was playing around with lighting and stuff like that at my house.
I just grabbed some cookies out of the pantry and started taking pics to play around with and put in the layout,
thought that I was doing alright with the pics.
Let me know what YOU think!

i think a light on the cookies would look amazing.

i cant imagine a scenario where shadowed cookies would look better.

I'm sorry, but I don't think that it's very good...

First off, like what's been said, you need to lighten the image up more. More light on the subject, more on the background.

Next, the focus... Is it just me, or is only the very tip of the top cookie in focus... I see you shot 1/160th at f/5.6. Try shooting f/8 or so. Get a bit more of the subject in focus.

In general, the composition of the cookies is fine, but the rest of the image is a bit dull. The colors don't really pop-out, and the background is a bit dull as well.

As far as composition of the entire image is concerned, I think it might be nice if you have the two cookies both in focus, and in the background you have a cup of coffee or some tea blurred, more of a "food/eating" environment, and the background is a "Hollywood Style Bokeh". Not too much though. Just to give the feeling that you are in a restaurant or so.

I also see you shot ISO 400. Not bad, but if you have a tripod, I recommend shooting at 100. I mean it is still life really, so any motion blur shouldn't be a problem.

I'm curious to ask, what kind of lighting set-up do you currently use?

Good luck and continue to practice. I also recommend that you view professional food/commercial photographers portfolios and get some ideas/inspiration.

    Best,
    -AC

I have a 3 incandescent lights with 60 watt flood lights. I have the stuff that you put over fluorescent lights on it to make the light softer and to get rid of those dark shadows. I was thinking about that, I do need something in the background. Just keep in mind, I do the photo shoot on monday and I did that on thursday in my bedroom because I was bored. At that store, I set up about 4 or 5 lights and got everything set up. My camera will be on the tripod primarily but i will need to take it off for some stuff.
I really appreciate your input. I need some more if you are willing to prepare me for what is about to come

Even when you've got a nicer, brighter shot you need to do some PS tweaking ie.

    • levels
    • curves
    • saturation
    • balance
    • use sharpen / blur tools

    e.g.
