You can always bump up the amount of ram allocated to the application.
Usually, when there is a problem with QuarkXPress quitting, it is either a font issue or the preference file is damaged. I would think in your instance it is the preference file.
I believe that in QuarkXPress 4.x if you trash the preference file and let Quark build a new one, you lose some of the preset frames or arrowheads (something along those lines). If you have an original preference file, use it.
