Desktop Icon Label Text Background

I am fairly new to Mac, so please be gentle on me I recently picked up a PowerBook 1400, and am running Mac OS 9.1 on it. Is there any way for me to get rid of the "highlighted" block of color that surrounds the icon text on the desktop icons? It is driving me CRAZY! Thanks!
