Unhappy OS X 10.5.8 Windows reboots on log in

This is a problem with my son's computer. He is using a macbook pro running OS X 10.5.8, using boot camp to switch between mac and windows OS. It's been running fine, but suddenly stopped working right.

When he tries to log in to Windows, it goes through its paces, then reboots the entire machine back to the Mac Desktop. He tried to boot into Windows via safemode, only to be stopped while the system was trying to acces the stpd.sys file. On doing some research, he found he could delete this file and maybe the machine would work again.

The problem is, he cannot get access on the macintosh side of things to delete the file. He can find it, he sees it, but when he tries to delete the file, move it, or change permissions he gets the following message: "Read-only file system." So I guess what we need to know is, how can he access the Windows file system while running the Mac OS (since he cannot run in windows at all).

Thanks for any help anyone can give. He desperately needs the windows side for some classwork he's doing.

Hi, don't know if you fixed this yet. The post was 2 days ago and no one has yet posted an answer. Anyway, Mac OS X can not "write" on Windows partitions (only NTFS; FAT32 is fine). Which means you won't be able to delete that file. You'll have to download MacFUSE and the NTFS plugin. After installing both of these, you should be able to delete the file.

Now, on a second note, I highly doubt "deleting" that file will fix that problem. It's a system file which means after you delete the file, you'll probably get "Windows can not fine stpd.sys." I recommend using the Windows CD/DVD and running repair on it. For Windows Vista/7, just pop in the DVD and run "repair system" I believe. For Windows XP, you'll need to follow these instructions here.

Good luck!

Try accessing Win XP in "Safe Mode".
To get into the Safe mode, as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" as shown below. Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.
When you get into XP, reboot and it should work fine after that.
