OS 10.5 - Bootcamp may lead to virus?

I just spoke with an Apple representative who warned me about installing windows.

I told him I did not plan to go on the internet with windows.

He said if a gateway is present, and I am on windows, it may go on by itself. Is there truth to his claim?

Yes. I would download and install a free antivirus such as AGV 8.0 and install within Windows.

Here is a link:-

AVG Free - Download antivirus and antispyware software for Windows XP and Vista

But beware of AVG free if you're not a smart Internet user.

I had that one installed on my sisters PC and it caught a serious virus that become active a couple of days before. AVG, even up to date, didn't even noticed it.

Ended up formatting the machine.

That's pretty much how it works with Windows, so yeah, it's true.
Windows is still Windows no matter what machine you run it on.

Yes it will access and I guess all antivirus software does is give us the best possible chance of avoiding virus and all the other wares that live on the net. Make sure you keep whatever you use up to date.

Ahh the joy of OS X!

Thanks..

Understood.

But what if you are on the Mac OS (Not windows).

Can windows still access the net even if you are not using it (Bootcamp)?

uuuh... how can an OS access anyting if it's not running? can you make a toast if the toaster is not plugged in? Different scenario is when using virtualization [vmware or so].

kiss - keep your precious data on mac partition and backed up and you'll be fine.

SammySlim will become famous soon enough
No, Windows won't be doing anything if you are not running it under boot camp. Even in a VM, it won't access the internet unless the VM is "running," as opposed to shut down or suspended.

And, whether under Boot Camp or a virtual machine, Windows is susceptible to viruses so you definitely need the antivirus software of your choice. However, the Mac side of the house will be safe - you don't really need to worry about infecting your OSX volume as a general proposition.

Cheers

And of course you will find it necessary to go online using Windows for the Software Update feature if nothing else.
