Question Can't get directory listing on FTP

I have an FTP site at work that is running raiden ftpd. I have been able to connect to it using flashfxp on windows but have not been able to get it working on os x. I have tried all sorts of ftp applications but cannot get it to show a directory listing. But if I go to a terminal window I can log in and do an ls I can get a directory listing.

Today I downloaded CuteFTP and that one actually works.

My question is why is this the only one that works and is there a way to get the others to work.
