Secure SMTP connections to Gmail, what does my OSX server need?

I am trying to use php to create a secure server connection to gmail so that I can SMTP from my code using a gmail email account. What does my server need in order to be able to do this? Do I need a signed SSL certificate? How do I go about doing that? Is there any other was to do this besides using SSL?
