Setting up an FTP

i have searched but no threads that i found gave me a full anser on how to start from scratch. OK:

i have an imac that is on 24/7 and i want so set it up as a file server through FTP.i have no idea how to set it up, so i need help doing that. thanks!

I don't know much about setting macs up for ftp only but I found these:

i folowed all the steps in the 2nd link but then when i triedto access from my macbook it said it wa valid but it was refused. 1st ones is more complicated and i dont want to do
