MBP speakers not working

hey, on my my MBP the speakers have stopped working. there is a red light lit up in the headphone jack, so what i think it happening is the computer thinks there are headphones plugged in when there are not, anyone have any idea on how i can fix this, or do i have to get it repaired by apple? thanks for your help
