I have just tried to use my usb card reader on my iMac for the first time and it seems not be work. I tried it back on the pc and all is well. Any advice welcome.

Did you open finder after it was plugged in to see if it showed the various ports on the reader there?
Open Finder Preferences and put a check mark on 'External disks' under 'Show these items on the Desktop:' I cannot be held responsible for the things that come out of my mouth.
