but when i put it in and started up , i got no beeps and when i look at the system prefs it says that the extra ram slot is empty. ? is there anything else i need to do here, or do i just need to buy another chip and if so, where can i get a 512 for the cheapest , but will work! thanks

I'm no expert here, but if you buy cheap memory, don't expect fantastic results. Try crucial.com At the very least it will list your computer and you will be able to get the correct memory for it.
