Logic Board Reset?

So a little while back, my macbook was making this weird buzzing noise, followed by a nice long CLICK. Obviously, I was concerned, so I brought it to the Apple store. They didn't observe the problem, but they did reset the logic board, and I have yet to hear a peep from it since (knocks on wood). But I couldn't help but wonder:

1) What is the logic board?

2) How would resetting it help solve my problem?
