If I install a program, I know how to keep in on the dock, but how do I keep it as an Icon on the desktop?

Click on it once, go under File in the menu bar and choose Make Alias. Then drag the alias to the desktop, where you can delete the "alias" in its name.

Or make the alias by holding down the Option and Command keys, click on the application once (don't release the mouse button) and drag it to the desktop.
