do mac's have a utility that you should run periodically for cleaning and defrag like on a pc?

As a general rule, it's not required, and no tools are provided to perform a defrag. There are shareware (iDefrag) and commercial (the invaluable Tech Tool Pro) that will perform a defrag. Tech Tool Pro will also perform a vast array of tests and system optimizations in addition to de-fragmenting your drive. It's well worth it (and a 'light' version comes free with AppleCare).
