Do you see other letters next 2 diff keys? That's what it's used for. I'm not sure how it is on the reg mac book, but on the pro, you use it for diff buttons that serve multiple purposes.

Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.

for example, if you hit the f5 key and the volume goes up (on macbook pro but probably similar on the macbook) if you want to use the actual function of the f5 key in a software application, then you would have to hold the fn button down before you hit f5. I happened to reverse everything in the preferences.. hardware functions for me require me to hit the fn button where software functions work with just hitting the button alone.

I hope that helped.

Fn with Page up/Page down actually goes page by page.

fn is also so you can use a numeric keypad. Look at the IOPJKLBNM keys (or areound there) you should see tiny numbers. holding fn makes those keys into a calculator like keypad.
