Save the doc somewhere, then control-click it and select Open With ...

From the dialog, choose Pages and click the 'Always open with' checkbox.

Cheers for that. Will I have to do the same next time I download a different doc? Or is there an automated way to do it?

Nah, that's what the Always Open With option does. It means that all .doc files should now open with Pages.

you got the procedure a little mixed up...

when you right-click and choose "open with" there is no option to choose "always open with", so doing it that way only opens it with that application that one time.

To get it to the "always open with" option, you have to right-click and Get Info on the file. Then you choose the application and select "always open with".
