New Mac Book Question

What does the button on the bottom of my MacBook do? I've accidentally pressed it once or twice while it was switched off.

It lights up the little green LEDs to tell you how much charge your battery has. The more little green lights the better.

I'm assuming its the battery meter light. When you pressed it, a few lights lite up in a row? Its just the current battery level.
