iDVD took what may have been about 3 hours to convert and burn a movie in AVI format into to DVD (playable on a normal TV DVD player). Is that what to expect? It was a very long time! Is there another program that is more suitable for this?
Thanks

I use TOAST for burning DVD's... One thing that takes "extra" time is Verifing the copy... I choose not to have the program Verify, as I can do this myself by trying it in my DVD player.

Encoding a DVD does take a long time, depending on your machine. Your MacBook will easily take at least an hour or more to encode a DVD. That is completely normal.

How do you use iDVD to do what you did? Magic iDVD or OneStep DVD?

Magic iDVD. Was it the right choice? And even though the AVI was only about 700meg it said it would not fit and that I should change an option to "best fit" or something, so that it would fit. Then it went about encoding, and took a very long time. It seemed to take longer to encode than to actually watch!

Also, I am not sure (haven't tried yet) about subtitle files. If I want to make a DVD from an AVI file that has a separate .srt subtitle file, can both toast and iDVD do that? Do I simply drag and drop both files?

And, which is faster at doing all this stuff, Toast or iDVD?

Thanks

That sounds like an awefully long time, considering my 3.2ghz P4 system can convert AND burn in under an hour.

I'm talking a 700mb AVI file to DVD.

What program did you use? What steps did you follow? I would love to know. Perhaps some programs are faster than others? (I don't have the vast amount of hours it would take to test them!)

Well, on the Windows side, I use a program called AVI to VCD, DVD, MPEG Creator Pro by Cucusoft.. You have to pay for this, as I did.

It converts a ~700mb AVI file to an audio/video_ts folder in about 45 minutes, and it will even burn it for you, but I just burn it myself with Nero or Toast.

Depending on the size of the files you're re-encoding, conversion times will vary.

Basically, you can drag/drop an avi/mpeg into the program, configure the settings to your taste, and convert it. It's nothing very special, but to put those avi's on a dvd to play in a dvd player, it's great and effective.
