Macintosh HD on Startup?

Occasionally, on startup I am seeing the Macintosh HD icon in the center screen of my new Macbook. I click it, and the startup continues.

Is there something I am not doing right? Did I not shutdown properly?

Thanks in advance for this probably dumb question.

That happens if you hold down the alt key during startup, have you got a sticky alt key?

Thank you, I will look into the Alt-key of which you speak.
