G'day deficientsound & welcome to Mac-Forums

Put the install DVD in and reboot, holding the C key when you hear the Chime. Then navigate to Disc Utility and verify your Hard Disc. While there, you should also repair Permissions.

The blinking icon means the computer can't find a valid system it can finish the boot process with. Maybe you could try booting holding down the Option key. This forces your Mac to look in other places for the OS.

If that doesn't work, you can boot from the DVD like Pulse says and do the repair permissions and repair disk thingy. Looks like it just might need it.
