compress files

how do I compress files on a mac? I know of stuffit but I can't get it cause it costs money and the free version is only an expander 30 day trial.

is there a free program that does the same thing that you guys would recommend?

You can compress files natively with OS X. A right-click (or a Control-click if you don't have a multi-button mouse) will bring in the contextual menu that appears Create archive of "Name of file or folder here".

You don't need a free program, what you need is built right into Mac OS X.

Select all the files you need to place in an archive, then ctrl-click (or whatever other method you use to right-click) and select "Create archive of x items". Depending on how big the original files were, wait a bit and you'll have a zip file ready to go.
