I have seen on some default Dashboard screenshots that their calendar is red and is long in height. Mine is black and long in width, is there any way I can change it?

The screenshots you saw were probably running outdated versions of OS X . With one of Apple's recent updates, the calendar widget got replace by the new black one.

I'm not sure, but maybe you can find the old widget in Apple's Dashboard Downloads area on their Website.
