iMac won't start

I've an old iMac, running os10.2. When it boots it goes through all the usual start up procedures, but ends with a blue screen, no applications running and no sign of any icons or the task bar. The hard drive can be read over a network, but nothing can be started on the computer.

Any ideas what's the matter?

hey dude .I read the posts you suggested and some guys are running xp and getting the blue screen? You also thisother guy huunting these pasts threads...I'm missing something so if you are in the know clue me in?
