I'm not sure cleaning the key off is going to matter - it sounds like the keyboard might be damaged in that area. Is it only that key or are keys in that area also not working?

not sure if this is how to reply....no other damage, was a splatter, not total spill, put computer upside down as tried to catch son leaving and came back to wipe clean hoping none got inside....was told to pop key off and clean hoping only sticky residue as my only issue and computer 2 yrs new.

Removing a key (any key) from a MacBook Pro keyboard is not an easy task and it's very possible that you may damage the key permanently. But if you wish to give it a try, watch the following YouTube Video: LINK
