I have a MacBook Pro and would like to know what is a good external hdd. I am not real tech savvy, but would like to get a reliable backup.

I have used an IOMEGA hard drive to back up my PC for many years without any problems. That has been totally reliable, but I shall need another now for my Macbook Pro because the file format is different. I shall go for Iomega again on the basis of previous satisfaction.

Use one of these from OWC for backups, and it is fine. You can select the HDD size you prefer. Being BUS powered no external mains cable necessary:-

Bus-Powered Portable OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro mini FireWire 800/400, USB2, eSATA

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!
