    Specs:
    2008 15" MBP Yosemite, 2012 21.5" iMac Yosemite
Open your downloads folder and drag the item to the Trash.
Downloads folder will either be in the dock or you can locate it through Finder as well (or both ways).
    64GB iPhone 6, 64GB iPad Air 2.

Hmmm. I've never paid attention. If that is done while the little downloads window is open, does that item get removed from the list?

I don't fully understand the purpose of that little window. I suppose it's just a convenience for taking action upon a just-downloaded file.

What little window are you talking about? You mean the progress bar that pops up when you download a file?

I'm suspecting that the OP is either using a much older browser, or an alternate one to Safari.

Yes, and it shows recent downloads, presumably as far back as you have "saved" or more accurately, not removed.
