I just bought a new iMac yesterday. After setting it up, and using it with no problems, this morning I can not log on from the start up screen. When I click in the "password" box nothing happens. What am I doing wrong. Someone please help...

Sounds like you're entering the incorrect password.

Welcome to the Mac Forums.

You can't just "click" in the password box because as you found out - "nothing happens". You either have to enter the password you set up or, if you didn't set up a password, entering a null (press return) should work.
