I have a new iMac and am attempting to transfer everything from my older MacBook Pro. I am connected using firewire. The process started and has been running for 24 hours now with very little progress. I think that I need to stop the process and do some clean up on my macbook as it seems like it is hung up on something. My question is how do I successfully stop the transfer?

You didn't provide us with any other information about the transfer. Are you using the Migration Assistant? If so, force close the Migration Assistant application. One of the best ways to transfer data over from an older Mac to a new one is to use Time Machine.

Actually Migration Assistant should work just fine, you might want to give it another go.
