Just got a mac and don't understand how to open my "Final Cut Pro X" free trial.

Alright, so I know exactly nothing about macs, but I really need to use Final Cut for a project I'm working on. However, I can't download the free trial to see if I actually wanna buy it. Actually, I can download the free trial, but it's a .dmg file that won't open...
It says "Not recognized" and I got all confused, but then realized it said to move it to the applications folder. After I did that, nothing changed: I was still unable to open it. I tried opening it with disk utility but I have no idea how that works and don't wanna mess up my computer. Can anyone help me out please?

If you double click a DMG file and it says "Not recognized", the image is likely corrupt. Try re-downloading it.

Yeah, I tried that multiple times, but it isn't working. Why would it be corrupt is I'm downloading it straight from apple?

I'm going to imagine that the file is quite large. If that's the case, a slow or bad network connection might be the cause. Do you have a fast and consistent internet connection?

I have Verizon FiOS and the file says 30 bytes? I feel like that has to be wrong...
Is it too much to ask you to try it and see if it works? it's just straight from the apple website.

30 Bytes? It should be in the megabytes at least if not more. As soon as dinner is ready here I will try it and get back to you. It's the FinalCutx trial?

If possible could you post the URL you are using? Want to make sure I try the right server

Apple - Final Cut Pro X - In Action
Sure, right there, near the top right it should say "free trial"

Go to Support and shoot Apple a message about the problem.

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

Getting it now. It's 1.42 GB!!! I had a feeling it was close to a Gig. What browser are you using when you click on Free Trial? Latest Safari here.

For some reason, if I try to download the file, it comes in at 15B (no, that's not a spelling mistake). That was Opera. In Chrome, the download wouldn't even start, in Safari it came in at 30 bytes and in Firefox, it wouldn't start. Something's not right here.

Dennis, when did you try that and what browser were you using?

Tried it right before I posted that last message. Safari 5.1.5 in Lion 10.7.3. It's all on my hard drive, all 1.52GB of it. I went to the URL he posted and clicked on the Free Trial download button top right and then a page displays that asks for your info.

I had put 1.42 but here on my system it's 1.52GB.

Even if I try to use curl (command line), all I get is 15B. I'll have to investigate this a little.

I am going to zap the DMG and try it again. Will report back.

Edit: just tried it again and it was going to be around 1.5GB.

Try doing this from the App store instead.

I did my trial download from there a month ago and did the retail purchased version from there yesterday with no problems.

IIRC its a 1.48 gb file.
