There is no registry in Mac OS X to be cleaned.

Standing request for all troubleshooting: Please provide your Mac model/year and OS version. Also advise us if you have used or installed any antivirus, security, or "cleaning" software on your Mac. If you have installed MacKeeper in particular, you are hereby advised to uninstall it.

Well, I feel foolish now, seriously. Then perhaps you could tell me what to download to clean my ibook?

What exactly do you feel the need to clean? If you want a general maintenance utility, Onyx is our top recommendation. But OS X needs very little in the way of maintenance.

Titanium's Software • Download

If you have the install disks, just do a fresh install. Of course make sure you have backed up you docs first.

Why do that? "Just because"? There is rarely a need to reinstall OS X, and doing it as an alternative to basic housekeeping is downright ridiculous.

How bout, just do nothing. Mac OSX really doesn't need any cleaning.

I agree that it doesn't need "cleaning" but I can't in good conscience recommend "nothing" either. The Mac is like a well-tuned garden: it will mostly take care of itself, but the occasional bit of weeding/pruning (removing unneeded files) and the least little bit of watering (maintenance) will keep it blooming.

The three keys to a good "Mac garden" are pretty simple:

1. Keep a fair amount of hard drive space free on the boot drive. I've been suggesting 15-20GB for a while, more is better.

2. Make backups. Routinely. Faithfully.

3. Run a maintenance utility every now and again (really, just occasionally) to assist and complement the Mac's built-in maintenance. We like and trust OnyX and Maintenance, don't care for MacKeeper and similar products.

4. Keep your software up-to-date as much as possible.

That's really about it. You'll avoid 95 percent of the problems we hear about on this forum from these four steps, barring mechanical failure.
