Hello, Could someone please help me with a Folx download problem. I am using a G4 PPC Emac (1.42 GHz) running OS 10.4.11 and Folx 2.0.1028. I have been downloading a large zip file (36 Gigabytes) from a website. It is not a torrent, but if I try to use Safari or Firefox, the download is interrupted at some stage, and I cannot use these browsers to download files larger than about 15 GB, i.e. from any website, not just only in this instance.
In this case, Folx managed to download about 80 percent of the 36 GB file without any problem. It then stopped and is now giving the message: "Critical error (invalid HTTP response (state:65 errorcode:404)". I can't understand why and have tried restarting the program, restarting the computer, restarting the modem, etc. but to no avail. I went back to the website to check if the original URL which I pasted into Folx was now invalid or had changed - but it is the same URL and it is still active (it did start to download normally with Safari). Could someone please advise how to download the remaining 20 percent of the file without having to re-download all over again, as I cannot do this as I would then be exceeding my ISP download limit. - Or, at least could someone advise as to what could be happening here and what I could try instead, next month when my usage is reset. By the way I don't think the website has an FTP download facility ... Thanks for any advice, much appreciated ...

I've been trying to get the last file of a set downloaded, with no success.
I don't get it, all the rest downloaded fine.
I checked with the person in charge and they say they can download the file just fine.
My error code is:

(critical error (invalid HTTP response (state:65 errorcode:403))

Very similar to yours.
I checked the Folx site, and there was no place that had error codes listed.
I sent them an eMail about it, then found your post as well.
If I get an answer I'll let you know.

Good Luck.

I fixed it by downolading a new higher version of Folx 2.0.1029
After installing ti, without uninstalling the old 2.0 version.
The file downloaded just fine.

Hope this works for you.

Wouldn't it be simpler to just order the DVD box set from a discount site?? (honestly, the effort some people put into pirating stuff they are allegedly "fans" of never ceases to amaze me ...)

Hi, thanks for the effort of answering my question, but I am no longer interested in Folx or in using any other downloading software. The download referred to in my original question was a one-off, and a private video, not a pirated set of DVDs. When I found it could be downloaded, I obtained it directly from the producer on a DVD. So, the issue for me became moot (died) very shortly after my original post, and it was a pleasant surprise to get an email notification of your reply, but it is no longer relevant. I don't know if this thread can be deactivated - otherwise, thanks anyway.

Dear Great Pontificate of Geekdom, Chas_m,

I read your reply and was quite shocked that you would say such things, about my character, on a public forum.
Your answer, such as it is, is misguided, insulting and disparaging.
I have included your, so called, reply, to bring to your attention, its offensive tone and baseless aspersions.

NO !!!

No, because I wasn't downloading DVDs, porn, or anything like that.
My trouble was in downloading one, of several parts, of a graphic magazine.
I needed an English translation, as a study aid, to help me learn the Japanese language.

A friend of mine travels to Japan about once a year.
She goes to visit her brother, who lives there.
Some years ago, I asked her, if she would, please, buy a few graphic magazines for me, so I could learn to read everyday Japanese.

She did and I began to translate them.
When I finish one, I need another English translation, so I can compare all three.
One of the magazines she brought back, was not available in an English version.
So, there was no way for me to purchase it.

That being the case, I checked the web to see if another person, who enjoys the same graphic magazine, had done an English translation and posted it on the web for others to enjoy reading, free of charge.
Luckily for me, someone had done this.

It was in trying to download the multiple parts of this magazine, that I had trouble.
One part, just, wouldn’t download.
The site showed that the file had been downloaded successfully, but that was wrong.

Just so you know, In the past, I did speak about this problem with a lawyer, who’s firm handles international patent law.
According to him, downloading a non-professional translation of a magazine, book, etc., as long as no one receives any financial gain from it, is legal in the US, UNTIL a company buys the rights to publish the magazine, here in the US.
When this happens, you buy the new English version, of the magazine, and compare them all again.

You’d be surprised at how many ways, a magazine can be translated.
Japanese use hiragana, katakana and kanji regularly in daily life.
This becomes even more complex, as the kanji have multiple readings and the set of common ones, changes a bit every year, just as we add new words and discard old ones.
It’s a very dynamic language.

Anyway, next time, please, ask !
Don’t assume you know what is going on.
Get the facts first.
I find it very hard to believe, that someone would ask how to do an illegal activity on a public forum.
That’s just foolish to me.
As for me, I would have been happy to explain my problem further, to you, had you asked.

The good news is the problem has been fixed, with some advice from a friend of a friend.
I am now happily working on another translation.

I’ve written this extensive response to your “answer to my problem”, because I have a son who uses the web.
I do NOT want him to find these postings, and think that his mother has been involved in illegal activities.
I have been very strict about these issues and I think he would be upset, if he read this question of mine and your answer.
I hope next time, you will pause and think before writing something like this again.

I doubt it. Life isn't worth living without making some basic assumptions, particularly ones that are highly likely. And drab without opinions. I do like learning stuff though.

I'm happy to apologise if in fact I'm wrong, and I'm happy to assume that I am, so here you go: I'm sorry. I may be guilty of jumping to conclusions (I say "may" only because it's impossible for me to verify, but again I assume you're telling the truth).

You would not believe how many elaborate and defensive explanations some posters have come up with to cover their pirating or porning or cyberstalking or suchlike, so someone using a download manager to DL a huge amount of data the nature of which they don't mention is often going to lead to suspicions that are highly probable but not always correct.

I should have added in my previous post that download managers generally cause more problems than they solve, which is the real answer to your issue. If I may offer a suggestion for future posts: if you'd explained in a bit more detail what you were trying to do in your first post, it would have lessened the possibility of my (or anyone else's) biases colouring our replies, which would probably net you faster and better answers. Getting good solutions around here is all about putting in all the relevant information you can. Not saying you did anything wrong (you may not have been aware), just FYI for the future.

I don't know why my opinion matters so much to you, but thanks for the compliment about my level of expertise -- and in the interests of ending the thread on a positive note, good luck with your studies of Japanese.
