When I open a zip file that I have received in an email something flashes on the screen for a second and disappears and a zip icon appears in the doc for a second and disappears. Where do I find my unzipped files?

You might find them in a folder which was placed in your documents folder. If not there, it might be best to save the zipped file to your desktop first before unzipping it. Then the folder will appear on the desktop. You can always use Spotlight (small magnifying glass, top right in menu) to search for the unzipped files.
