Mail problem

I've just recently moved to an iMac and I'm having problems sorting out a few basics. Most importantly, Mail won't send, in spite of having checked the obvious stuff in System preferences. I'd be glad of some guidance.

You've checked System preferences, but what about Mail preferences?
