Finder Menu Bar

Is the Finder menu bar always visible in the home screen? It seemed to me that is was not there and suddenly appeared. Is there an auto-hide feature for the menu?

The menu bar is always present. Since Finder is always open, it gains focus when no other application is open. Therefore, when you have no applications open, Finder will be making use of the menu bar.
