What OS are you running?

Can you boot to your OS disk?

I've always wanted to be smart, handsome and modest. But, I guess I'll have to be satisfied with two out of three . . .

And when you get it going use the uninstaller to remove Sophos. As you seem to be from the Windows background and worried about viruses, of which there are none for OS X, download the free ClamXAV and use that. For now try zapping the PRAM< reboot and after the chime hold down all together Command, option, P and R keys, and keep held down until after the third chime. Release and hopefully reboots.

If you run Windows under Bootcamp etc., download and use Microsoft Security Essentials, also a free program.

Others also have this reboot problem after installing Sophos:-

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

The OS is 10.6.8 , an Mac Book Pro. I have gotten it started using the power button followed immediately by holding down simultaneously the command option and the p and r keys. Thanks for the help; I'm going to uninstall.

When you say can not get it to start does that mean completely dead or not booting up if the later retry while holding the shift key down and it should put you in safe mode from there you might be able to remove Sophos.
