1st post, w00t!

Quick question for anybody to tackle. I don't know if it's a back-door virus, bug, or software/hardware issue, however my machine at work seems to be on some type of rotating schedule of pissing me off.

I regularly am running Extensis Suitcase, Photoshop, Illustrator & Quark. I'm running OSx 10.3.9, and I know that Suitcase has "issues" with 10 in combination with Norton Anti-virus, (so i've heard from my boss).

My question and issue is that regularly my machine asks me to shutdown. It will go for months, weeks without doing it, and suddnely one day it's like pulling teeth to get anything done, because I constantly have to click cancel when it asks me to shutdown.

It's like it happens out of the blue, I don't know if anything triggers it or what? But it's total randomness it seems. I can work for days on end without it popping up asking me "are you sure you want to shutdown your machine?" So I'll click cancel, cancel cancel, etc ... like 6-7 times in a row, it'll rest for about half an hour, pop up again, than disappear for a while.

This issue is driving me crazy. Google'd it, and came up dry. My boss, and art director here don't know how to resolve the issue, and I've even done a quick search on this forum, but came up dry as well and so I'm posting my issue.

If anybody has any thoughts, or previous experience with this nasty bug coud yea let me know how to beat it?

Thanks

m

It's "asking" me if i want to shutdown, it's not a forced, "SHUTDOWN ur comp" screen.

If it is only every couple of months couldn't you just say yes and go make a cup of coffee while it reboots? :dive:

It might be that the underlying journalling filesystem needs to clean up a bit, usually the machines are set to do this at around 3am but if you put the machine to sleep it will not be able to do its housekeeping.

Where would I check to see if this is happening? Can I set this time?

Actually that's a good question to which I don't know the answer and my OS X book is out on loan.

I am sure we've had a thread on here about it before though.

I know this is obvious but have you tried repairing permissions?

Also, if you are putting it to sleep, the ram may not be clearing effectively, and could be the reason why you expriencing random shut-down messages.

In all probability, since it's at his office, they'll turn the machines off at the end of each workday, entirely prohibiting such schedule maintenance.

'cause when it rains, you know it pours.

yea I shutdown my comp everyday before I leave, but I could schedule a start-up / shutdown from 3:00am - 6:00 am since I don't get here till 7:30-8ish in the morning.

But do you think these random "do u want to shutdown now" messages are from improper scheduled maintenance?

Can't guarantee it of course, but it's definitely worth a shot to try, and see if that resolves the problem. Even if the lack of scheduled maintenance isn't the source of THIS problem, in all likelihood another problem will surface as a result in the future if you don't fix it.

Could it be possible that one of your keyboard keys is a shortcut to shutdown the computer and you are catching the key ever so slightly on occasion? It may not be, but just a thought...
