Hi, i bought a macbook last week and i am in the process of changing my files over from Windows to the Mac

I have several text files on my windows system. I understand that these will open on the mac, however i would like to save them to the most suited file type for the mac

Can someone suggest if i should leave them as .txt or save them as another text file format, thanks in advance

There is RTF which is the default for TextEdit in OSX, but I also just leave them as .TXT. That way they work on anything out there.

If you'll be working with text files on the Mac, get yourself a good text-only editor such as TextWrangler (free).

A .txt file format is a fairly universal file format so it should be the same in Windows or Mac. There shouldn't be any problems leaving it as .txt. Just like jpeg image files text files are not OS specific.

Technically there isn't any file format that only works in Mac or Windows. All you need is the correct software to open them. However there are certain file formats that are more popular on Windows than Mac and vice versa. This means it will be easier to find software that is able to open these file formats.
