I am new to the world of Apple. Just bought and imac G3 and can't install anything on it. I keep getting errors like, "Bill of Material missing". This happened when I tried upgrading Safari 1.? to the latest version. Also, It came with iTunes 4. When I try to go to the iTunes Store, it tells me that I'm not connected to the internet...eventhough I can surf the web. The only thing I've been able to do is do an update for OS X. I realize that this computer is very old, but any advice will be most apprectiated. Thanks!

As you already stated, the machine is old. You didn't mention which version of OS X it's running nor how much memory is installed, hard drive size, and so forth. Many of the applications that may already be installed on the machine such as Safari and iTunes can not be updated beyond what version will run with your operating system.

Fill in the specs for us and I'm sure someone who is more familiar with that machine will respond with some good advice.

Also, Welcome to the Mac Forums.

Welcome!

The basic problem here is that you're trying to make a car out of a horse and buggy. The last iMac G3 (I had one -- the white one -- and LOVED it) was made in early 2003 -- that's eight years ago, or several epochs in computer time.

A G3 can still be used for selected tasks, if you can match up contemporary OS versions and software from that era -- but it's no match for most of the modern internet or for that matter any modern applications. It's just too old.

I am quite surprised to hear that you bought a G3, as I haven't seen on with a price tag over $20 for several years now. I don't know what you paid for yours, but without a matching suite of disks that originally came with it (which would have contemporaneous, compatible software), I have to say it's essentially worthless.

Asked and answered in your other thread. Don't multi-post, it's against the rules.
