Drag it from Finder back to the Dock. Don't drag the one from the sidebar though - go to "Macintosh HD" and drag the Applications folder from there back to your Dock.

Right click on it and choose Display as Folder.

(That's the answer to your next question.)

And, be sure to drag it to the right side of the Dock - in other words, to the right of the separator. Otherwise it won't stay.

I went to Macintosh HD and dragged the applications folder back to the dock, however it did not appear as the gray folder like it once was. It almost looks like the address book icon but when I put the cursor over it it says applications and opens up as before it disappeared. Is this right or did I do something wrong, why did it not appear the same as before? Thanks

Right click the stack (folder in the dock) > Display as > set that to Folder.

Ok thanks got it! I sure have a lot to learn but I love my iMac, only have had it three weeks, always used PC also should I have the firewall turned on? I have really learned so much from this website.

If you are behind a router you can safely leave the firewall off as the routers firewall will do.
But if you are out and about using unknown internet connections you might want to turn it on.
