Mac Specs: iMac 21.5 9/3/10 OS X Mavericks 10.9.1 Firefox 26,0 iPad, iPod Touch

For some unknown reason the mail icon in the doc no longer shows the presence or number of emails. Using iMac 21.5 six months old.
What can be done to restore this helpful device?

Try Mail>Preferences>General> "Dock Unread Count">"Inbox Only"

The Count was set correctly as you pointed out.
A reboot seems to have restored the feature.
