I'm taking an intro to programming class and i need a C compiler to write some simple programs. I downloaded xcode, but it seems pretty advanced for what I need. I just need a blank space to write a simple code and I need some help finding that.

Any editor will do. You might want to look at TextMate, TextWrangler and various other "programmer's editors."
