Two things:
Can I simply do an OS install to a USB flash drive from disks that came with my new iMac and thereby create an emergency boot source? How big a flash drive do I need to get to also load Disk Warrior or TechTools as well as the OS onto the flash drive? Actually, a third thing: Where could I find out this information for myself, i.e., does "it" say somewhere OS takes X amt of space, Disk Warrier, X amt of space, etc.? Thank you all for reading and your gentle, considerate responses. |

Welcome to mac-Forums
You can do but I would read up about it first. You will be looking at around 8-12gb usb thumb drive stick for the job. Here is a link for a nice little tutorial about it: Install & Boot OS X Leopard from a USB Flash Drive | Maciverse Hope this helps - Simon Rest In Peace Steven Paul Jobs February 24, 1955 - October 5, 2011 [aged 56]

Three problems solved in one: a backup a bootable backup to continue working when the internal drive dies until you have the time to get it replaced a bootable backup with all your tools to troubleshoot and/or restore the internal drive in case of a faulty update, app install, etc. 16 GB flash drive: $20-$40 500 GB external drive: $60-$70 1 TB external: <$100 I cannot be held responsible for the things that come out of my mouth. Definitely go with the external drive like bobtomay noted.
I use CarbonCopyCloner on a 64GB thumb drive as a backup and you can boot from it. Trouble is, the thumb drive freezes up at times when using some apps.
