Ok so for a friend I want to make a compilation video for him where I want to take clips of video from random youtube videos that he has made over the years. Sorta have close to zero experience with video making/editing and I was wondering how you would go about this? Free would be ideal, thanks guys!

If you have a Mac (which according to your specs you do), you can use iMovie to snip-and-clip. It's extremely easy and has a timeline across the bottom. Just imagine a movie projector filmstrip that you are cutting with scissors and taping together.
And then you can use iDVD to make it DVD-ready. 16GB iPhone 5, 64GB Wi-Fi only iPad 1st Gen. Reminder: Please include your Mac's specs. This will make it much easier for the other members to assist you.

Sorry, I assumed your friend had the originals on his computer or video camera.
You're right, you would need the movie files. 16GB iPhone 5, 64GB Wi-Fi only iPad 1st Gen. Reminder: Please include your Mac's specs. This will make it much easier for the other members to assist you.
