connect mac to lcd flat screen - i'm a newbie to this

i have a macbook pro, 2009, and just bought a rca cable, before my mini port to hdmi cable arrives. can i run sound from my mac through the tv speakers? tv is samsung 40". what do i connect to? I tried connecting to the audio in, red and white, set tv to pc, but no sound came out.
