Sage advice for the new Mac switcher

I actually find that using windows and mac at the same time helps, i had a pc for my entire life and 3 years ago our family got a mac while i used my PC and the family mac at the same time helps so much, now iv'e had an iMac, a MBP and currently a Mac Mini.
I made connections between the two. Maybe it doesnt help everyone else, but for some it might help.

It is just what I was looking for, all in one place, fantastic

Just one question, if I wish to remove an app that I have added, can Snow Leopard remove all the app. Or do I need a 3rd party app to remove 'hidden' software?

Most Mac apps can be removed simply by dragging them into the trash. If the app had a full install wizard when you first put it on, chances are it also came with an uninstaller.

If you're really paranoid about leaving a preferences file behind, you can use a program like AppCleaner to do a more comprehensive uninstall.

I just re-read the original post here. And you know what? I've found nothing to nit-pick on. And I'm the one who is nit-picky on everything. So yeah a really well thought post. Sure there is a lot more you can say and that needs to be said. But for an initial few words they are very good.

just got my first mac a macbook air 13" getting to find my way around it is sooo much better than my windows pc so much quicker opening running and closing programs. Cant see me going back to be honest.

I'm new here and trying to get back in to the MAC.
This forum looks real helpful.
I've been a PC user (and builder) since 88, my last Mac was a 87' Macintosh, and a 81' Apple II. (Oh I remember my star Trek game)

There seems to have been a lot of changes since I've been gone.

I did pick up a book about 2 months before buying my new MacBook Pro. It's Switching to the Mac, it was helpful but not as good as actually using a Mac and learning.

I look forward to reading a lot of your posts and who knows some day I might even know enough to start helping out.

Thanks for this thread. I'm a new Mac user (MacBook Pro 15") and I'm loving it. I will admit, though, I installed Firefox right away and eventually installed Sophos Anti-Virus, but before I came across this thread.

I hope nobody gets the impression that I don't like FF -- it's a perfectly fine browser and if you genuinely like it better, great! It's all about finding the best tool.

Do yourself a favour, though, and uninstall that Sophos. It's just taking up resources pointlessly, IMHO. At its core, much of Mac OS X is UNIX, and UNIX hasn't had a virus in -- well, ever that I know of. Certainly nothing too serious, though I wouldn't say it's perfectly secure either. The point, though, is that its very structure throws up enough obstacles to make a virus nearly impossible to pull off -- and that PLUS the tightly-knit Mac community means there's very little chance of anything genuinely malicious getting very far; it's nearly impossible to write a real virus, and even if one did, the word (and the cure) gets out too fast to allow for much damage, which is what virus writers want.

In short, we're unappealing to lowlife scum. Awwww, what a shame.

I wish I had found this forum about 6 months ago when I switched to Mac. All great points!

#2 gave me a laugh. My grandson was ridiculing Mac. Main reason he gave was that you didn't need to add programs. Honest!

Other reason about the helpfulness. I had posted a question about e-mail and quickly got a response. Quick, simple to understand & not condescending. Thank you!
