My buddy took a video on his windows computer and i would like to be able to watch it on my but it won't open. Its format is .avi, but again it was shot on a windows computer. is there any software that anyone knows of that will let me format it so that i can watch it on my mac??

VLC works, but you can also download Perian. It's a plug in that allows you to play many more file types with quicktime (and other video related aspects on the mac)

I second the VLC suggestion.
Perian is OK, but in my opinion it is slow and buggy.
