does anyone have some advice on a simple way to connect these two computers. I'm not having much luck creating a network, or finding a cable that has the correct ends. Seems like they should connect wirelessly...
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

You are looking to setup what is called an ad hoc network. Here is a pretty decent article from Macworld on a myriad of ways to do it including wireless.
