Do you think this this setup practical for school purposes? Let me know, if you have personal experiences

I do it the other way around. Mac laptop, Windows (XP) desktop. I use google to sync calendar and contacts. Since I use gmail as my primary email, this is pretty easy. Also, setup mail (if you want local mail) via IMAP so that it syncs between web/mac/windows without issue.

I too do it the other way around.

I find Apple notebooks (laptops) to be much better than any notebook running Windows.

I have a windows dekstop, but I rarely use it.

I only have the windows desktop because I need VB2k5 for school. Until recently that computer had been a dedicated FreeBSD file server.

Keeping files, e-mails, contacts, etc. in sync will be easy with MobileMe and/or a thumb drive. So, yes, I think your plan will work.
