Is there a way to always display widgets

It is indeed possible and has been for the last few OS versions if you are willing to cut and paste a Terminal command. Try these directions Dashboard widgets on my Mac OS X desktop? :: Free Tech Support :: Ask Dave Taylor!. Seems to still work OK even in Snow Leopard.

You're welcome. I forgot to mention that under Snow Leopard I don't think I had to log out of my account then log back in.
