External HD file system

Whats the best file system i can put in my external drive, to use it with time machine to put backups in it??

is there a way to disable USB booting? when i turn my laptop with out the external HD it takes about 8 seconds (SSD) and when ever the external is plugged in it takes about 15 seconds.. Is trying to boot from it.. any way to stop it??

There is no "best" file system to use with Time Machine because it won't work with any file system other than the Mac HFS extended FS. And, you should use the GUID partition scheme not the Apple partition map.

Mac Specs: 2.8 GHz MacBook Pro 10.8,3 8 GB mem, 2.66 GHz Mac Pro - Dead, iPhone 4

Slydude is offline
Open System Preferences and open the Startup Disk preference pane. Make sure that it is set to your internal drive. If that is set correctly the Mac wouldn't normally be trying to boot from the external drive.

Not quite sure what would be causing that big a delay unless something is checking the external drive for problems.

still does hang for extra 5 seconds when the external is connected
